After our debut appearance with\u00a0Other Voices<\/a>\u00a0in Dingle last month, it\u2019s time for the\u00a0Banter Salon\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0second outing with the festival and TV show as they head to Derry next month for the\u00a0UK City of Culture 2013<\/a>\u00a0celebrations.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, the Banter Salon will be located at\u00a0The Cottage in The Craft Village<\/a>\u00a0on Shipquay Street on Saturday and Sunday February 9 and 10. Doors open both days at 3.45pm-ish and we\u2019ll kick off at 4pm. Admission is free, but capacity is limited so get there early.<\/p>\n

The Banter Salon at Other Voices<\/strong>\u00a0in Derry will feature a wide variety of discussions and conversations over the weekend including:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0The Guardian\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0music editor\u00a0Caspar Llewelyn Smith<\/a>\u00a0on what comes next for the music business in the wake of HMV\u2019s woes, Universal\u2019s expansionist tendencies, the growth of streaming services and other flotsam and jetsam<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Ludovic Hunter-Tilney<\/strong>, the\u00a0Financial Times\u2019<\/a>\u00a0pop critic, on Psy, \u201cGangham Style\u201d and why pop from the east rather than the west may be the future<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Derry Now:<\/strong>\u00a0a number of Derry artists, culture practitioners and interested parties discuss the city\u2019s current cultural and artistic health and highlights, what the UK City of Culture designation means for the city\u2019s art practitioners and an attempt to identify what\u2019s next for the city. This panel will include\u00a0Maol\u00edosa Boyle<\/a>\u00a0(Turner Prize curator, Void gallery, Lumiere\u2019s Brilliant),\u00a0Joe Carlin<\/a>\u00a0(director of Foyle Pride) and\u00a0Abby Oliveira<\/a>\u00a0(spoken-word poet and artist who has worked extensively with the various communities of Derry).<\/p>\n

–\u00a0John Naughton<\/a>, The Observer\u2019s technology columnist and Open University professor of the public understanding of technology, on technology and identity<\/p>\n

– Bringing it all back home: local hero\u00a0Bronagh Gallagher<\/a>\u00a0on her music and her home city.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Ed Vulliamy<\/a>\u00a0from The Observer on Amexica and the fraught war between drug cartels carried out on the wild frontier that is the Mexico-American border.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Mary Fitzgerald<\/a>, Irish Times\u2019 foreign affairs correspondant, on what is currently happening in Mali and Algeria, the post-Arab Spring world and how seismic changes in Egypt and Libya amay play out in the long term.<\/p>\n

Ed and Mary will also discuss the role of the war correspondant and other issues in the modern media.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Derry Tech<\/strong>: a look at Derry\u2019s brave new tech world and especially\u00a0CultureTECH 2013<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Mark Nagurski<\/a>\u00a0(director of CultureTECH) and\u00a0Emer Grant<\/a>\u00a0(Void Gallery).<\/p>\n

There will also be performances over the weekend from\u00a0Jesca Hoop<\/a>,\u00a0Rosie Carney<\/a>,\u00a0Ryan Vail<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0George Ezra<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the Banter Salon, Banter producer Jim Carroll will also be chairing the first of this year\u2019s\u00a0Civic Conversations<\/strong>\u00a0in the city at the\u00a0Void Gallery<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday February 7 at 7.30pm. The Civic Conversation will be a series of open forum discussions designed to involve and engage the local Derry\/Londonderry community during the City Of Culture year. Guests will come together to discuss all aspects of the City of Culture \u2013 cultural, political, economic and social.<\/p>\n

Joining Jim will be\u00a0Declan Sheehan<\/strong>, Project Curator at BT Portrait of a City for City of Culture 2013 and independent curator for various projects including Void, Artlink Fort Dunree Residencies, Tulca and others;\u00a0Anne Crilly<\/strong>, filmmaker, arts lobbyist and Media Lecturer at the University of Ulster; and\u00a0Mhairi Sutherland<\/strong>, a visual artist who has recently completed a practice based PhD in Dublin on conflict, landscape and photography and is currently involved with a cultural project in the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry, which addresses the issues around the transition of the RUC to the PSNI as a result of the Good Friday Agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
